What does personal training mean to you?

A. Following an off the shelf routine used by all and sundrie.
B. Following a starvation diet to lose weight.
C. Leaving your session totally exhausted and in discomfort.
D. Following the old adage “No pain no gain’.
If personal training means the above to you then I’m not the man for you.

Personal training should mean exactly what it states personal to you! This is what it means to me and so it should to you. Don’t forget you’re an individual with individual needs and goals. The one size fits all approach to training and dieting is outdated and totally unprofessional in my eyes.

Stop guessing and start assessing” is a motto passed on to me by my mentor, Dax Moy. Assessing my clients fully before embarking on a program is an integral part of my philosophy and approach to personal training. After all, you wouldn’t think it very professional if your dentist guessed which tooth needed treatment without first assessing you, would you?

An example comes to mind, of a client who sought my help a short while back. He had put his trust into a fitness professional who had him performing squats to improve the tone in his legs. Unfortunately squats aggravated his existing back condition, created problems with his knees and on top of all this, never produced the tone in his legs he was looking for. For six whole months he endured this non-logical approach to his training, feeling worse than when he first started training. Feeling let down and totally despondent he sought my help and advice. The first thing I did was to perform a full KCA. This highlighted the reason why squats were creating problems for my client. Due to his posture then, squats threw the stress onto his back and knees. His legs were receiving hardly any of the load. After 8 weeks of following a corrective exercise plan with myself, I finally let my client squat. To this day he has had no problems with his knees or back and using his own words, his legs have ‘improved beyond his wildest dreams’.
Unfortunately I find this example all too common when talking to my clients for the first time. I am fiercely passionate about my personal training system and my success rate speaks for itself. Professionalism and dedication to achieving my clients goals is my main priority.
